How to Compare Protein Powders Before You Buy
Farm Fed, Itholate and Lean Whey: what actually differs?
The useful differences are the formula, exact flavor and package value. All three manufacturers describe 25 grams of protein per serving for these product families. That shared headline does not mean their serving weights, calories, ingredients or flavors are identical.
| Product family | Protein and formula details | Useful distinction | Flavor scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Axe & Sledge Farm Fed | The current manufacturer page describes whey protein isolate, 25 g protein and 100 mg DigeSEB enzymes per serving. Manufacturer formula → | Its named addition is an enzyme blend. That identifies a formula difference; it does not establish a benefit or make this the best option for everyone. | WCN has listed Squirrelly Nut Cookie Crunch. It is not among the flavors on the manufacturer page reviewed here, so we do not assign that flavor the current range’s nutrition values. |
| RAW CBUM Itholate | The official Mint Chocolate Chip, 25-serving panel lists whey protein isolate and 25 g protein per 35.6 g scoop. Manufacturer flavor panels → | This mint panel includes chocolate chips, sucralose and a milk allergen declaration. It provides an exact flavor example instead of assuming every Itholate flavor has the same nutrition. | WCN’s option is named Mint Chip Ice Cream. The reference below is the manufacturer’s Mint Chocolate Chip panel; check the label on the actual tub for the revision supplied. |
| MuscleSport Lean Whey Iso Hydro, 2 lb and 5 lb | The Iso Hydro pages describe 25 g protein from whey protein isolate and hydrolyzed whey peptides, plus L-carnitine tartrate, MCTs, CLA and Fibersol fiber. 2 lb formula → · 5 lb formula → | This is a different ingredient combination from the other two families. Compare the additional ingredients with your preferences; their presence alone does not prove better performance. | The 5 lb selector includes Lean Charms. The reviewed 2 lb selector does not include WCN’s Salted Caramel option. Exact flavor calories, serving weights and allergens are not inferred from these family descriptions. |
One exact flavor reference: Itholate Mint Chocolate Chip
The manufacturer’s 25-serving panel gives the following values for one 35.6 g scoop. This is a named label reference, not nutrition for the whole Itholate range.
| Protein | Calories | Total carbohydrate | Total fat | Other label details |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25 g | 130 | 4 g | 1.5 g | 1 g fiber; 1 g total sugars; 0 g added sugars. Contains milk. |
Here, a 35.6 g scoop supplies 25 g protein: scoop weight and protein grams are different measurements. Compare the labeled protein amount before treating equal scoop counts as equal quantities of protein.

Flavor inclusions can change the decision.
MuscleSport identifies wheat-containing inclusions in some Iso Hydro flavors, including Cookies & Cream and Dippsadoodles. It also describes Lean Charms as containing marshmallow pieces with artificial colors. Those are concrete reasons to compare the exact flavor rather than selecting by the protein family’s name alone.
The manufacturer’s shared-equipment warning is separate from a flavor’s ingredient and allergen declaration. If an allergen matters to your purchase, use both the exact package declaration and the manufacturer’s information for that version.
When does a larger serving count earn its higher price?
For a 28-serving package versus a 25-serving package, the cost-per-serving break-even price is 12% higher. Divide 28 by 25 to get 1.12. If the 25-serving option costs $50, the 28-serving option breaks even at $56. At the same total price, 28 servings cost about 10.7% less per listed serving.
Those dollar amounts are an arithmetic example, not WCN prices. Use the current option prices in the catalog comparison and confirm the exact labels. Equal cost per serving does not establish equal nutrition, ingredients or suitability, and the calculation excludes shipping and tax.

Manufacturer sources reviewed November 3, 2026 (UTC). Formula statements apply to the linked manufacturer pages; exact nutrition applies only to the named Mint label. No taste test, health outcome or product ranking is implied. For local availability, contact Bakersfield or Santa Clarita with the full product, flavor and size.
Compare the exact flavor’s protein source, protein per serving, full serving size and ingredient list first. Then compare servings per container and the selected package price. A bigger tub or a bigger number on the front label does not answer all of those questions.
Make a shortlist around the label and your preferences
Start with the products that match the source, flavor and format you want to buy. Copy the source exactly as it appears in the ingredient list. A listing may name a particular protein ingredient or a blend; do not substitute a broader description from another product.
Next, choose the actual flavor and size on each product page. This keeps your comparison tied to a purchasable option. The product family’s starting price may belong to a different package, and a photo may show another flavor. Keep the selected option visible while you read the label.
Compare the same details side by side
| Detail | What to record | Why it matters to the purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Exact option | Brand, product name, flavor and package size | Keeps the label and price attached to the same item |
| Protein source | Ingredient names from the current label | Lets you compare the source you actually intend to buy |
| Labeled serving | Serving size and protein amount per serving | Prevents a larger serving from being mistaken for a directly comparable amount |
| Package quantity | Net weight and servings per container | Shows both the physical package size and the basis for a serving-price comparison |
| Full label | Ingredients, allergen statements, directions and warnings | Provides information that a flavor name or front image may omit |
Read the serving size before comparing numbers
On a Nutrition Facts panel, FDA explains that serving size is the basis for the nutrition information and is not a recommendation of how much to consume. Read that measurement together with the protein amount. Two labels using different serving sizes need more context than a comparison of their protein numbers alone.
Look at the full panel, not an isolated front-label callout. If one page provides a readable label and the other only shows the front of the tub, request the missing information before deciding. Do not calculate missing nutrition facts from a product name.
Calculate price per labeled serving
Use the price for the size and flavor you selected, divided by the number of labeled servings in that package. Keep the result next to the other comparison fields rather than using it as the entire decision.
Illustrative example: a $48 package with 24 labeled servings works out to $2 per serving. A $60 package with 40 labeled servings works out to $1.50 per serving. These are hypothetical prices, not West Coast Nutra offers. Different serving sizes, protein amounts, ingredients and checkout charges can change the comparison.
For the complete calculation method, read our supplement cost-per-serving guide.
Check the exact flavor, then choose your purchase
Read the ingredient and allergen information for the selected flavor, especially when switching from a product you have bought before. Do not assume the same product name means an unchanged label across flavors, package versions or reformulations. If avoiding a specific ingredient is important to you, get the current label rather than relying on a search snippet or an older photo.
Once the label, quantity and price are clear, choose the option that matches your stated preferences and budget. This comparison does not establish taste, mixing performance or personal suitability; those require evidence beyond the package facts.
Buying online or visiting WCN
Browse the protein collection for current online options. For a store visit, contact the Bakersfield team or Santa Clarita team with the exact brand, product, size and flavor. Online availability does not confirm that the same option is on either store’s shelf.
Common questions
Is the largest protein tub always the best value?
No. Compare the selected package price with its labeled servings, then review serving size, protein amount and ingredients. A larger tub can cost more overall without offering the lowest comparable price per serving. It can also be a different formula or flavor, so check the complete item identity.
Can I compare protein powders by protein per scoop?
Only after checking what each label means by a scoop and a serving. Those measurements can differ. Record the labeled serving size and protein amount together rather than assuming two scoops represent equal amounts of powder or the same nutrition information.
Can flavors of one protein product have different labels?
They can. Use the current label for the flavor and package you select, including ingredients and allergen information. A clear photograph of another flavor does not verify the contents of your chosen option. Ask for the correct label if it is missing or unreadable.
Can I confirm a protein flavor before driving to a WCN store?
Yes—contact the specific store and give the full product name, brand, flavor and size. Ask the team to confirm that exact option before traveling. An available online option is not confirmation of local shelf stock, and pickup eligibility depends on the choices actually offered at checkout.
